RECAP: Down and Dirty @ Palms, 4/2/16

It’s always nice to get away from the usual scene to play a gig, especially when it’s at the request of a friend. So, when Kirk Cosier called me to open up his show, I was too excited to say no! Kirk and I hadn’t played – or even seen – each other since we played at Pacha NYC’s basement for the Bingo Players back in December 2014, so I was excited for more reasons than one. He had been working on a lot of original material, and I had a few new technical tricks up my sleeve that I was itching to play around with. In the days before the show, I dug around to find the DJs I would be playing alongside, and I was far from disappointed. Wes Laga and Pan!c were accomplished Traktor performers and I was excited to see what they would bring to the table.

Following my traditional pre-gig dinner at Panera, I hit the road for Stamford. We had all planned on arriving early to set up and bounce some ideas around for the gig, and I was blown away. What I had imagined to be a casual pre-show jam turned into a full blown creative sesh – we experimented with new ways of setting up our equipment, and the night brought with it some unorthodox back-to-back routines, before the doors had even opened.

I was slotted to play a double opening set, two hours long. I hadn’t played a “marathon” set in a while, and with the crate digging I’ve been doing, I had a few tracks to pull out from up my sleeves. My set started deeper than usual, but the energy for the night was definitely present from the very first track- I brought the energy up and down on demand to really rock the house. Once I found my rhythm, I pulled some inspiration from DJ Cue of HammerHeadZ and “brought the groove” with Kryder and Tom Staar. The heat was really coming, and my last half hour came in with drop after drop. Wes Laga kept the party going during our transition, playing the essential EDM festival anthems, and his set culminated with a B2B of hard trap with Kirk Cosier. Pan!c brought in a really melodic set to close the night.

“Down and Dirty” was definitely an understatement for the night! The energy was incredible, and I had a blast playing with some really talented DJs. Check out my set here!
