The Truth Behind Being a DJ Girlfriend

Whenever you’re at a club, party, or show, you can always be sure that there will be a DJ there. They’re quite literally the life of the party- without them, what’s there to dance to? But there’s almost always something else that goes into getting that perfect set that most may not know about. That’s right, you guessed it, it’s the DJ Girlfriend.

What does this mean exactly? I’ll tell you, it’s a lot more than going clubbing all night for free. It’s hard work, and this is the reality of the DJ Girlfriend:

1. We know what Serato, controller, and DDJ mean.
Being a DJ Girlfriend comes with a lot of responsibilities, including knowing everything in the modern DJ dictionary and what it means. We’ve all got Serato on our laptops… we’re still trying to figure that one out.

2. We’re basically an electrician, photographer, and laborer all in one.
A lot of the time, when we get to an event, we’ve got to help set up. Sometimes that includes carrying 15 lb. speakers and boxes of cables inside the venue before the show. After that, it’s time to set up. We could basically wire an entire home sound system if we wanted to – or at least that’s what it feels like- after wiring up the amps, speakers, and controller all in one night. One of the better jobs is being the photographer and social media assistant. During the set, most of the time is spent getting awesome pictures for Instagram and their official Facebook page.

3. We’re over getting dressed up for their gigs
Getting dressed up every single time we’re going to a gig is pointless now. Because of the jobs mentioned above, it seems really impractical to wear heels and a mini dress to carry equipment in. We’re most likely to be found wearing jeans, a nice top, and flats 99% of the time.

4. Family parties are spent without them
What does it mean when you have a DJ in the family? Really awesome free music at your birthdays and celebrations! What does that mean for the DJ Girlfriend? You’ll be spending his birthday, your birthday, and many others basically without him, because he’ll be running the music. But, when he puts on a long mix and comes to join you for a dance, it makes all the difference.

5. Dates are mostly casual and laid-back
Netflix and chill is the real deal in a relationship with a DJ. Because we’re out until 3 AM a lot of the time, we’d much prefer to relax at home and watch How I Met Your Mother than to go for a night out on the town. Our nicer dates consist of getting brunch or early dinner… and then coming back to watch Netflix.

6. You get awesome perks
While being the DJ Girlfriend is hard work, it’s also a blast. We go clubbing for free, with the person we love the most. We get awesome bragging rights:

“My boyfriend is a well-known DJ in NYC, what does yours do?”

7. We keep them sane
With the spring season coming, gigs are piling up left and right- rooftop nights, graduation parties, and weddings will all be on the list to say the least. We’ve got the job of keeping the DJ grounded and organized. We help pack their bags, snacks included, to ensure the best gig possible. Luckily for you, DJ Roodz and I have made it easier for all the DJ’s and DJ girlfriends out there with a gig bag packing list!
