RECAP: Flattopps Fundraises – Hurricane Edition [10/1/17]

I grew up in a Catholic High School in the Bronx, with an emphasis on service to the community. In the four years I was there, I went on service trips to Camden, NJ; Tennessee; and Ecuador. So, when the news hit the airwaves regarding the Hurricanes devastating the lower US, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean, I felt compelled to do something. Ever since the idea popped into my head, I knew I wanted to do something music-related. So, I called up some local talent, in the forms of Black Ivan, Loup Rouge, and Luther Calvin Riggs. It didn’t take much to get them on board. Plus, A La Keighla pitched in with TWO great poster designs! Check them out below:

Finding a venue on such short notice would be tough. Thankfully, the folks at Flattopps in Astoria let us use their space. It couldn’t have been a better location. The environment there is always energetic and funky, and the food is awesome! Honestly, it’s one of my favorite spots to play at because I get to spin house and nu-disco. The boozy slushies definitely drew a crowd on their own. But, the manager, BJ, went above and beyond. Flattopps not only ran drink specials for relief efforts, but also matched all cash donations toward the cause. They also took physical donations of baby food, diapers, and similar goods, and donated them to a local firehouse. BigBoyNerd even came through with raffle prizes and spun a guest set! We raised money for Latino Justice & United for Puerto Rico. Check out my recap video below:

From all of us involved in the event, we are extremely extremely grateful for everyone who has contributed to the relief effort.
