RECAP: Vanic @ Webster Hall, 2/27/16
What a night!
Webster Hall, in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, has always held a special place in my heart. I played my first big NYC gig there, when I opened the balcony lounge for Moguai, and then came back to headline on the same stage that night. Whenever people ask me about my history as a DJ, my Webster shows always come first.
I opted this time to drive into the city, which, coming from the north Bronx, can be a bit of a hike and take a toll on my wallet in more ways than one. But, thanks to the BestParking app, I got to reserve and pre-pay for my space. Take that, NYC Muni-Meters!
I generally prefer to open venues, and Webster Hall’s balcony lounge is no exception. The lineup was packed tight with DJ’s, so unfortunately my usual hour-long set was cut down to 45 minutes. I had decided to take a chance and tell the promoter to slot me second for the night, and I’m glad I did- the opener was playing to an empty house! I couldn’t help but feel bad – DJ’s, we’ve all been there, and it’s not fun.
I loaded up my first track for the night, and found my groove with some old school deep house. The set itself was solid; what started with deep house quickly went melodic and progressive, with some of my secret weapons – top 40 remixes – mixed in here and there. My time slot couldn’t be better. A birthday party was filing in and as the room packed, I played a solid transition set, leaving the DJ after me to keep the energy up.
I didn’t make it back to school ’till 2 A.M., but it was worth it. Webster Hall, you never fail to impress!
