RECAP: Thomas Gold, La Patilla @ LAVO [4/21/18]
Oftentimes in our lives, things have a way of coming full circle. This is one of those times.
Many of you know that La Patilla and I go a ways back. We met in 2014 during the Webster Hall days. I ended up filling in for his slot on the balcony (as well as my own) while he played the mainstage. Since then, I’ve been extremely fortunate to call him a friend and brother, and watch him rise on his musical journey. He’s since played such venues as EDC Vegas and Miami Music Week. Despite his successes, he’s remained one of the most genuine, humble, and hard-working people I’ve ever known.
What many of you do not know, though, is that Thomas Gold was one of the first dance music DJ’s I had ever listened to. His “Fanfare” podcast was my go-to back when festival anthems started to take over the mainstream radio. Because of Thomas Gold, I fell in love with so many songs and sounds. I discovered artists like Hardwell, Kryder, and Jewelz and Sparkz. If it wasn’t for a friend/promoter who introduced me to him, I wouldn’t be the DJ I am today.
When these two worlds collided, it was an experience unlike any other. By sheer luck, La Patilla ended up playing with Thomas Gold at an event in Miami, and was asked to tour with him for a few dates afterward. The tour was routed for LAVO NYC on April 21. Patilla invited me to come do some photo and video.
LAVO is a unique venue; it’s an upscale Italian restaurant above, nightclub below. We got to sit down for dinner after sound check, and it was awesome! The staff brought out a few signature dishes, as well as their 20-layer(!) chocolate / peanut butter cake and fried Oreo’s for dessert. Afterwards, we all headed downstairs to the club for Thomas’s set.
There is no better way to say this: Thomas Gold’s set was everything I expected it to be and then some. He brought everything to the decks, from progressive house, to electro, to heavy hitting G-House tracks. Among them were his hits, like “Take It Back” (one of my faves), and “Scrub the Ground” by Tommie Sunshine and Chocolate Puma. I eventually had to put my camera down because I couldn’t stop dancing! On a more somber note, Gold paid tribute to Avicii with a special edit of “Levels.” The crowd, still processing the loss of one of dance music’s pioneers, was truly touched.

All in all, it felt surreal to see one of my best friends play alongside one of my idols. LAVO will undoubtedly be a night I’ll never forget.
